Respawn dropped some hotly anticipated and much-leaked details about the next season of Apex Legends. Season 3 is called Meltdown, and it will deliver the new legend Crypto and the relatively new Charge Rifle. More importantly, ranked mode matchmaking and scoring will change slightly in Apex Legends Season 3.

The announcement came via the game’s official Twitter, and it features a very interesting mini-movie. Titled “Forever Family,” it details the origin story of upcoming legend Crypto. There are quite a few details in every scene, plus a lot of hints to explore. We will leave that to the players and community theorists for now.

It goes without saying that the Apex Legends Season 3 Battle Pass is receiving a lot of attention. For now, all we know is that it will deliver “over 100 exclusive items,” including brand new types of content. We won’t know what these new content types are for at least a couple of days. However, if we had to guess, they will be unique weapon charms and dive trails. Currently, those two are implemented as rewards for Ranked mode only. As Ranked isn’t exactly popular right now, Respawn will likely throw a bone to players who don’t want to grind it just for cosmetics.

Apex Legends Season 3 Ranked mode tweaks

Speaking of Ranked mode, Respawn states they are happy with its current state. Thankfully, they will still make some adjustments in Apex Legends Season 3. First and foremost, all players will be “soft reset”. In this case, that means downgrading their rank a league and a half.

The point system will now account for assists. If you damage an enemy player at least 5 seconds before they are downed, you get an assist for the kill. That effect only applies if they are downed by a player on your squad, though – no third party assist steals. Match scoring treats assists as kills, so both values have a shared max total of 5. This stat is now multiplicative, rather than additive, to your overall match score.

Apex Legends season 3 meltdown ranked system

Respawn has a clear vision for how this new system will impact Ranked mode. We will have to wait and see it in action to know if it will actually improve the Ranked experience.

Apex Legends Season 3 starts October 1. Respawn will release additional Meltdown information and teasers through the rest of September, so stay tuned to Daily Esports for our regular coverage!
