World of Warcraft is getting darker and more intense with its new expansion, Shadowlands, announced at BlizzCon 2019. The event, taking place in Anaheim, California, revealed stunning details about the new addition to the World of Warcraft universe.
The start of the new expansion
As World of Warcraft game director Ion Hazzikostas announced the exciting new game features, we watched World of Warcraft‘s new CG Shadowlands cinematic come to life. Blizzard is bringing us back to Icecrown, the fortress of the Lich King. The dark scene involves Sylvanas Windrunner, the banshee queen, challenging Blovar Fordragon, the Lich King, at the Frozen Throne, ultimately leaving Sylvanas with his crown. As she attempts to break it open, she states that her doing so will set everyone free. The sky opens up into a giant storm, and then everyone can see the new alternate dimension, known as the Shadowlands. With death, tortured souls, and other horrific themes, players will experience a new side of World of Warcraft. Fans can guess where the story goes from there, as Blizzard shares this new expansion has plenty of room for exploration and creativity.
What are some key features?
The featured video explains the main new features of the new expansions. Zones such as Revendreth, Ardenweald, Maldraxxus, The Maw, and Bastion are revealed. This would be the first time World of Warcraft players can venture into the Shadowlands and experience these five new zones of the afterlife. Along with these additions, players can also form a bond with one of the four Covenants featured in the Shadowlands. This paves the way throughout their journey through the new zones with class-specific abilities according to the chosen Covenant. There are known to be Kyrian of Bastion, Venthyr of Revendreth, Necrolords of Maldraxxus, and Night Fae of Ardenweald. As a result, each one has a unique story behind them and players have the opportunity to experience the Shadowlands in various perspectives.
“At Its core, Shadowlands is an expansion that is built around the idea of choice, agency, and self-expression, in the rewards you pursue and with the allies with whom you cast your lot,” said Hazzikostas.
Finally, Shadowlands is the next expansion following Battle for Azeroth. The expansion will be available for pre-purchase Nov. 1.
