The Call of Duty League (CDL) has announced format changes for this year’s championship. All 12 teams will now have the chance to compete for the championship in a double-elimination tournament. The addition of the bottom four teams allows everyone to compete while also giving fans a reason to support their team. Initially, the top eight teams would have advanced to the championship with the bottom four teams being out of the running altogether.

Call of Duty League Championship placements

With the addition of the bottom four teams, the format for the event has also changed. The seeding for the championship is as follows:

  • 1st and 2nd will be automatically seeded into round 3 of the winner’s bracket.
  • 3rd and 4th will be automatically seeded into round 2 of the winner’s bracket.
  • 5th through 8th place will be seeded into round 1 of the winner’s bracket.
  • 9th through 12th place will be seeded into round 1of the elimination bracket.

These placements are determined by which teams have stayed consistent throughout the Call of Duty League. Teams in the top four will have been the most dominant while the bottom four will have had the least amount of success. Although, the fact that wins determine how close you are to the winner’s final has upset some of the Call of Duty League fanbase. Notably, 1st and 2nd seed only have to win three series to become champions.

$4.6 million prize pool

In addition to the format changes, the $4.6 million prize pool has also received changes:

  • 1st (2020 Champion): $2,000,000
  • 2nd (1 team): $1,000,000
  • 3rd (1 team): $500,000
  • 4th (1 team): $300,000
  • 5th (2 teams): $200,000
  • 7th (2 teams): $125,000
  • 9th (2 teams): $75,000
  • 11th/12th (2 teams, last place): $0

The Call of Duty League Championship tournament will take place in August 2020. However, the league has yet to reveal if the tournament will take place in person or online.
