Valve Corporation’s auto battler game Dota Underlords is getting its own version of a battle pass. However, the free-to-play game is still in beta, so the new feature will also remain free for testing as the Proto Pass. The game publisher asks players to “keep the feedback coming” so that their team can learn what improvements to make for their official Season 1 Battle Pass.
With the free Proto Battle Pass, players will unlock “unique banners, emotes, and even a new board type” by playing games of Dota Underlords. There are also a variety of daily and weekly challenges that players can complete to earn cosmetic items. By playing multiplayer or hardcore mode bot games, players can earn experience that will build up toward levels in the battle pass.
It is set up this way so that players cannot farm battle pass experience too easily by playing against easy bots. Each level of the Proto Pass that is unlocked comes with a unique reward like most battle passes in other games. For a free game like Fortnite or Apex Legends, a battle pass is a great way to monetize the game without introducing any pay-to-win functions. Dota 2 has its own version of the battle pass that releases with each year of its International esports tournament event.
One such example of a current reward is the Path to Sunbreeze board. Players can unlock it by reaching level 5 on the Proto Pass. Other cosmetic effects include win streak effects, respawn effects, banners, and firework effects. There are also ring designs around player portraits, the addition of chat messages, and upgrades for your banner’s base.
In the future, the Battle Pass will be paid. More information about the Proto Pass can be found on the Dota Underlords website. Have you tried out Dota‘s version of the auto chess game?
