EA Sports wants to add Fortnite emotes to FIFA 19

With how popular Fortnite has become it is no wonder aspects of it have reached players in pro sports. Many professional athletes have come out with their interest in the game, ranging from simple enjoyment to full-out obsessions. Some have even incorporated Fortnite’s popular celebration emotes in real life. A now-famous example of this occurred in the World Cup, when Antoine Griezmann, a player for the eventual championship-winning French team, broke out a “Take the L” dance after successfully scoring a penalty kick.

With the upcoming release of FIFA 19, in an exclusive interview with OkayCool, it was asked if we would ever see these celebrations emulated in the game. After all, EA likes to make its games as authentic to the real-world versions as possible, and this was a notable moment on FIFA’s biggest stage.

FIFA 19 would like to add Fortnite celebrations used by athletes in real life

EA Sports wants it to happen

During the sit-down with OkayCool, FIFA 19‘s creative director, Matt Prior, confirmed the team’s interest in adding these emotes in an effort to stay true to the real-world product. However, he did mention that there could be some licensing roadblocks along the way.

We’re player first and authenticity first. If you’re seeing it in the real world, we would ideally like to see it in the game. It’s in the game. You know, that whole thing… We have seen celebrations like the Fortnite one going in. There might be licensing issues around them, but we are always looking at the real world of football and trying to replicate it as much as possible. Specifically to those ones, I’m not sure if there are licensing issues around that.

It will be interesting to see how EA navigates this and how the licensing works out with Fortnite. After all, we know that not all of Fortnite’s emotes are exactly original creations either.

FIFA 19 is set to release for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on September 28, 2018. For more information head on over to the official FIFA 19 website or check out the rest of our FIFA-related coverage here.
