FMPONE, TheWarOwl on CSGO custom player models

The latest massive update to hit CSGO features first-ever custom player models. The never-seen-before addition to the game may be exciting for some as it adds more customization options apart from skins, knives, and gloves. However, some prominent figures on the CSGO scene are against the player models, such as Shawn “FMPONE” Snelling and TheWarOwl.

FMPONE sends a strong message

FMPONE, one of the most prominent map creators in CSGO, has a very strong opinion on the addition of player models into the game. FMPONE sent out a tweet in which he calls the custom player models “game breaking.” He also adds that “Mappers pick certain skins (.kv files) because they want clear contrast.”

The photo in the tweet shows how the green custom player models blend in on FMPONE’s newest take on the Cache map. This ruins competitiveness as players will pick player models with a similar color scheme of the map, giving them an unfair edge on either the terrorist or counter-terrorist side.

TheWarOwl chimes in

TheWarOwl has a very similar view to that of FMPONE. Being a huge CSGO YouTuber as well as streamer, he expressed his views in tweets as well as in his newest YouTube video. In the video, he shares his concerns: “are these models going to ruin the game experience?” He continues, “I looked at all of them and I gotta say, not really, they aren’t very offensive on the eyes, they fit the theme of the game pretty well.” However, he does go on to say that he “could totally see players equipping specific players based on the map.” TheWarOwl goes on to give visual examples of player models that would potentially match color schemes of certain maps. Towards the end, he suggests that the best solution would be to “disable custom player models at the pro level.” Doing so would get rid of unnecessary imbalances in competitiveness.

Moreover, in a tweet, TheWarOwl suggests that it would be best for competitive modes to turn off custom player models for the opposing team. Meanwhile, your teammates could still be able to see your custom player skin. Seems like a reasonable solution to the problem.
