Frost Giant Studios has announced that they have raised $4.7 million to scale the independent game development studio’s team as they prepare to build a prototype in the real-time strategy (RTS) space. The seed round was led by gaming, esports, and interactive media venture capital fund BITKRAFT, with participation from 1 Up Ventures, GC Tracker, Riot Games, and Griffin Gaming Partners.
Frost Giant Studios raises $4.7M
Scott Rupp, Founding General Partner at BITKRAFT Ventures, commented:
Frost Giant Studios is on a mission to bring one of the most beloved genres to a broader audience. We are excited to see some of the most experienced leaders in real-time strategy game development come together to build a game that will secure the future growth of the RTS genre while staying true to the core player fantasy of RTS.
Frost Giant Studios was founded by veterans of the game industry, in Tim Morten, former Production Director for StarCraft II, and Tim Campbell, original Lead Campaign Designer for WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne.
The two are joined by others in art, design, and engineering roles from Blizzard, who will help the game company in further advancing the RTS genre. They will apply player feedback and behavior over the past decade in order to lower the barrier to entry into RTS, in addition to enhancing co-operative, campaign, and competitive gameplay.
Creating the next big RTS title
Tim Morten, Frost Giant Studios CEO, added:
Real-time strategy players are an incredibly passionate community, and they deserve not just a great new game, but one they can share broadly with friends. Building a worthy successor will take time, but we’re incredibly excited and grateful to carry real-time strategy forward at Frost Giant Studios.
A recent announcement revealed that Blizzard would no longer be issuing paid content updates to StarCraft II. Since the most recent August balance update, the company will no longer release any more, but they did state that the esports ecosystem would continue to be supported. The explanation given for the halt in content development would be to “free up time to think about what’s next … for the Starcraft universe as a whole.”
The real-time strategy genre has played a huge role in the growth and development of the competitive gaming community. As such, Frost Giant Studios has stated that its new venture will carry forward this legacy.
Further announcements from the game development company are expected in 2021.
