G2 Esports forms academy team G2 Arctic

Berlin-based organization G2 Esports has announced the establishment of G2 Arctic, its League of Legends academy team. However, rather than competing in the affiliated regions of the League of Legends European Championship (LEC), the team will instead participate in the 2020 Spanish Superliga Orange.

Introducing G2 Arctic

G2 Arctic will be managed by Spanish esports organization Arctic Gaming, a team with some brief League of Legends history. The previous roster of Antoine “Ushuala” Debuire, Víctor “Vixzy” Solanas, Dimitris “Von” Bakiris, Gustav “Bushy” Schwerdfeger, and Sergi “Simpy” Ruiz has since been released.

Arctic Gaming most recently competed in Riot Games’ 2019 Iberian Cup, where it finished in 13 – 16. The organization hasn’t seen a great performance in other events either, with mostly bottom-half bracket placements. The last time it participated in the official Spanish league was in 2017, during Season 13 of the LVP Segunda División. While the team took first during the season, the Segunda División is the second level of competition needed to advance into the Spanish Superliga Orange.

Spanish Superliga Orange

The Spanish Superliga Orange is the biggest Spanish esports league for League of Legends, but it doesn’t have direct progression to the World Championships. Instead, teams try to qualify for ESL’s European Masters event, which distributes a €150,000 prize pool to competitors. The 2019 event saw Berlin International Gaming (BIG), Vodafone Giants, mousesports, and Fnatic Rising take first to fourth respectively.

G2 Arctic also announced its sponsorship for the new academy team as Nabisco cookie subsidiary Chips Ahoy! G2 will collaborate on brand activations to deliver content to fans in the Spanish esports scene. For now, no further information has been released on the players that will make up the lineup.
