It is happening! The long-awaited Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred from the Diablo franchise, is finally coming to the Heroes of the Storm Nexus!
Blizzard teased Mephisto yesterday on its official Heroes of the Storm Twitter account. Today, the company released a short preview video from the Gamescom 2018 featuring the hero.
Mephisto is one of three – a Prime Evil – alongside his brothers Baal and Diablo. Mephisto was originally created from one of the seven heads of Tathamet along with the other Great Evils. Together with his two brothers he ruled over the Burning Hells for untold ages and led the armies of Hell against the Heavenly Host of the High Heavens.
Those familiar with Diablo franchise and specifically with Diablo II might remember this Prime Evil from Act III. Mephisto, the older brother of Diablo, is also known as the Lord of Hatred and is the demon behind the corruption of the church of Zakarum.
Hitting enemy Heroes with basic abilities reduces Mephisto’s basic ability cooldowns. Skull Missile and Shade of Mephisto grant 1.5 seconds of cooldown per enemy hero hit. Lightning Nova grants 0.3 seconds per Hero hit.
Lord of Hatred allows Mephisto to deal a lot of damage as long as he casts his abilities at the right time and hits multiple enemy Heroes with each usage.
Conjure a skull that travels in the target direction after 0.75 seconds, dealing 127 damage to enemies hit and Slowing Heroes hit by 25% for 2 seconds.
This ability serves as an effective poke tool and makes it difficult for enemies to escape from Mephisto’s other abilities.
A ring of lightning appears around Mephisto for 2.5 seconds. Enemies within the ring take 48 damage every 0.25 seconds. Each time a cast of Lightning Nova hits a Hero, its damage is increased by 4%, up to 40%.
Teleport to a location, dealing 78 damage to nearby enemies and leaving behind a shade at Mephisto’s original location. After 2.5 seconds, Mephisto is teleported back to the Shade’s location.
With clever usage, Mephisto can finish off any retreating enemy hero, dodge area damage, and avoid crowd control.
Channel for 2.5 seconds, revealing all enemy Heroes. After the Channel completes, all enemy Heroes take 357 damage and are Slowed by 40% for 2.5 seconds.
This ability can act as a finishing move when Mephisto can’t reach a retreating enemy with his basic abilities.
After 1 second, unleash a wave of evil spirits that Roots the first enemy Hero hit for 2 seconds and deal 160 damage to them over the same duration. Durance of Hate spreads outwards from its initial target, Rooting and damaging additional nearby enemy Heroes.
Durance of Hate provides Mephisto with a powerful disruption tool. A well-timed cast can turn any team fight in Mephisto’s favor.
Mephisto is a ranged assassin who excels at dealing sustained area-of-effect damage and evading crowd control. His gameplay revolves around positioning and choosing the right moment to strike a large group of enemies. The greater the number of enemy Heroes he can hit with his basic abilities, the more often he can cast them. This renders him extremely powerful versus a large group of enemies, but he is weak in 1v1 skirmishes. Mephisto is reliant on his allies’ crowd control abilities; without them, he will find it hard to land his own abilities on enemy heroes. Also, his health pool is fairly low which makes him vulnerable to burst damage.
