Infinity Ward continues to mix up how we play Call of Duty. In a recent blog post, Activision went over some of the new features making their way to Modern Warfare. One of these new features includes a complete change to how classes work in-game.
Similar to Modern Warfare 2‘s One Man Army perk, players will be able to fix their classes on the go in Modern Warfare. However, it won’t be nearly as overpowered as in MW2. Instead, players will have the ability to adjust their loadouts within the Create-A-Class in the middle of a match.
This means that if you feel another attachment would work better over your current one, you can swap it out mid-game. While this seems like an innovative idea, how will it affect the overall gameplay of Modern Warfare?
To some, this may not seem like a big deal. However, to others, it completely alters the way the game works. Normally, this kind of change wouldn’t be a huge deal. In the past, there were only so many attachments for each weapon. It didn’t make too much of a difference which one you picked.
However, in Modern Warfare, there are upwards of 60 attachments per each weapon. There are several different categories for every part of the weapon (underbarrel, magazine, optic, muzzle, etc.). In these categories, 6-8 attachments can be used that all serve a specific purpose.
With this kind of arsenal to choose from, being able to swap attachments mid-game becomes a big deal. For example, if you notice you keep getting killed by a sniper in a tiny window, you can throw on a more enhanced optic and FMJ to shoot him through the wall.
There are countless scenarios where this ability could prove extremely useful.
While it does sound practical, could this have a negative effect on the game? Of course it could. A system like this one may be abused and exploited by players who like to use some annoying tactics, such as “noobtubes”.
However, in the overall grand scheme of things, this feature should have positives that outweigh the negatives, at least in casual play. Competitive play is a whole other monster, and this feature most likely won’t be active for those playlists or in the professional scene. It wouldn’t make much sense to give pros the option to change their loadout in the middle of a Search and Destroy game.
All in all, this seems like a great feature. Infinity Ward may run into some trouble with people exploiting the system, but they can work out those bugs as the game progresses. This feature should be live when the Open Beta kicks off in Sept for PlayStation 4 pre-order users.
