Magic: The Gathering Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths spoilers season has begun. In a fully animated trailer, Wizards of the Coast gave viewers their first real look at the monstrous world of Ikoria. The whole trailer feels like a Godzilla-style monster film, with giant beasts in every scene. Complete with Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation,” the whole trailer is a blast to watch… and then actual Godzilla, King of the Monsters shows up.
In the trailer, the green Planeswalker Vivien Reid fights against one of the many behemoths from Ikoria alongside a large, very cute chimera. Green and glowing crystals are scattered about an ancient ruin, and just when it looks like they have killed the beast, the crystal glows orange and the monster comes back to life.
The trailer did not give much in the way of what to expect from the new plane outside of the fact that Vivien is hunting down everything she can. What the trailer did reveal though, is a major card from the set. Godzilla, King of the Monsters was revealed as a new Magic: The Gathering card.
Only the strongest survive on Ikoria
The legendary Kaiju is making its way to the Magic world as a Buy-A-Box promo. There will be 16 Godzilla Series Monster cards in the English release of Ikoria, with three more exclusively available in Japanese. The Godzilla Series Monster cards are only available as special promotional cards and will not be in packs.
Each of the Godzilla-themed cards are alternate art versions of creatures in the main Ikoria set. Mechanics and abilities are the same; only the names and artwork are different. Godzilla himself is replacing a card called Zilortha, Strength Incarnate.
Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths will be available digitally on Magic: The Gathering Arena on April 16. The monster-filled expansion is set to release physically on May 15, a full month later.
