Last year, Treyarch surprised everyone when they announced the arrival of Blackout, Call of Duty’s first battle royale mode. While there were some major flaws with it, Blackout proved a fine game in its own right. It’s kept avid fans busy for the last year or so. But, of course, that changed when Call of Duty: Warzone released.
Improving upon many aspects of Blackout, Warzone is generally considered to be the superior title. This is great for obvious reasons, but one not-so-obvious reason is that Activision may not introduce another battle royale to future Call of Duty titles.
Warzone the last of its kind in Call of Duty?
With the battle royale genre gaining so much popularity, it seemed inevitable Call of Duty would join the field. It made sense for Activision to enter another market from both a fiscal and player satisfaction standpoint.
However, if the rumors are true, Warzone may be the publisher’s last entry in the genre. According to reputable leaker TheGamingRevolution, Activision has no plans to release another battle royale with future titles. You can watch TGR’s YouTube video on the subject below.
Essentially, the leaker states that his sources have said nothing about a new battle royale coming in 2020. This year’s title is being developed by Treyarch and is said to be a Black Ops reimagining. However, development is reportedly rushed, so this could explain why the developers won’t make a new battle royale.
To back this up, Activision supposedly told YouTubers at the Warzone capture event that this would be the last title of its kind. Of course, these are merely leaks and rumors, so nothing is set in stone. Call of Duty can still change its mind in the coming months or years if the right opportunity comes along.
