Everyone knows Phyrexian mana is broken. One mana for 2 life seems fair on paper, but it rapidly becomes degenerate when built around. However, knowing that didn’t stop Wizards from printing a brand new commander made to abuse it! K’rrik, Son of Yawgmoth is next in Magic: The Gathering Commander 2019 spoilers.
For 7 mana (or 4 mana and 6 life) K’rrik, Son of Yawgmoth is a 2/2 Horror Minion with Lifelink. This seems terrible at first glance, but his second and third abilities are what make him crazy. Every time you cast a black spell, you can treat the black pips in it like Phyrexian mana. At the cost of most of your life, you can dump almost your entire hand for free. On top of that, K’rrik gets bigger every time you cheat costs, making his lifelinking body bigger to make up for the downside of paying so much life. Play enough spells and he’s suddenly one-shotting players with commander damage. No matter how you build him, combo or Voltron-style, Krrik, Son of Yawgmoth is going to be insane in Commander. If he shows up at your table, consider him archenemy on sight.
Despite being intended for Commander, K’rrik could see some play in Legacy. At 4 mana, he has a reasonable-enough cost to play. His ability could potentially win you the game in the right deck. There’s massive combo potential, so I’m looking forward to seeing what people brew up. Mono-black storm featuring Tendrils of Agony, anyone? Alternatively, Dark Ritual into K’rrik into dumping your entire hand of mono-black creatures is an incredibly fast clock. If it is fast enough for Legacy though is the question.
Do you plan on building around K’rrik? Is he going in your favorite EDH deck or going to be your new Commander? Do you think he’s good enough for Legacy? Let us know down in the comments below, and stay tuned for more Magic: The Gathering Commander 2019 spoilers!
