The news would break on Korean esports website, Fomos, this past Monday. This now leaves KT Rolster with a fresh squad, save for the AD Carry position. However, this new lineup does seem to bring plenty of potential to the table. KT Rolster would end up picking up multiple new players after dropping a majority of their old core this past offseason. Could this lineup find more success than the last one?
KT Rolster has been one of the best teams on paper for some time. Boasting a roster of budding young talent and proven stars, many people had high hopes for the team. Unfortunately, KT Rolster would never really find the success they would crave for. The only year that the team would win the LCK would be in their last season together, and even that wouldn’t provide the ending they were looking for.
They would end up finally winning the Summer Split championships in Korea. As a result, they would become the favorites to win the World Championship, alongside China’s Royal Never Give Up. In the Group Stage, the Korean superteam would breeze through their opponents. Only losing one match to Invictus Gaming, they had solidified their status as the top dog at the tournament. Unfortunately, their Worlds dreams would crash in a spectacular way.
KT Rolster would lose to the Chinese second seed, Invictus Gaming, in a spectacular five-game series. It was one of the most exciting series of the tournament, where Invictus Gaming would end up winning the whole tournament later on. However, for KT Rolster, it was hugely disappointing to the organization and fans and would prompt their roster to revamp.
Bdd was a huge point of focus for Kingzone DragonX and the rest of the LCK. Many people thought that he and former KT Rolster mid laner, Son “Ucal” Woo-hyeon, had the most potential out of any young mid laners in the region. Unusually, both teams would let their respective mid laners go this past offseason. Picking up Bdd is a big win for KT Rolster, as the 19-year-old phenom could become a star mid laner in the coming years.
Also, signing Smeb and Score to an extension is a big win for the organization as well. Smeb has been constantly considered the best top laner in the world, and not building around him would be a huge mistake. At the same time, Score has been a consistently good jungler for the team and has been flying the KT Rolster colors since 2014. His experience will be necessary to help guide some of the younger players on the team, like Bdd. Overall, the KT Rolster rebuild has been pretty successful, and if they can avoid their luck in the past, this team could surprise many people next year.
