Without question, the biggest debate in the Call of Duty community the past few years has surrounded skill-based matchmaking. The widely disliked feature has been confirmed to be present in Call of Duty titles since WWII. However, many fans think it runs even farther back than that. Nonetheless, the community is tired of this feature that makes public matchmaking like playing in the Call of Duty League. Many were hopeful that Black Ops Cold War would go another way but according to a leak, SBMM is back this year.
Black Ops Cold War to feature SBMM
Activision chose to officially reveal Black Ops Cold War (BOCW) earlier this week after a long Easter egg hunt in Warzone. There’s an official cinematic, or gameplay, trailer coming on August 26 and the community is more hyped than ever.
However, that hype was brought down a tad when a new leak surfaced. Yesterday, well-known leaking account @_TomHenderson_ tweeted that skill-based matchmaking is returning in BOCW.
SBMM in BOCW is EXACTLY the same as Modern Warfare. It's the same system. https://t.co/RxVlj7gpMr

Tom Henderson, previously known as LongSensation on YouTube, has been accurately leaking COD information for a while. However, even his words aren’t to be taken without a grain of salt. Leaks like this are incorrect all of the time, and no one truly knows what’s going on inside of Treyarch/Activision.
That said, let’s say for a minute that the leak is indeed accurate. Henderson states that the SBMM in Black Ops Cold War is exactly like Modern Warfare. If this is correct, then players will once again be matched up with other players around the same skill. This type of matchmaking takes kill/death ratio, win/loss ratio, and score per minute into account.
The general feeling across the community is that this makes standard playlists too competitive. If the developers want a competitive atmosphere, then that should be present in competitive playlists, like Ranked. However, if this leak is true, then the developers clearly see a benefit to this kind of matchmaking.
