Your dad’s favorite fantasy card game is exploding. With a strong presence in esports now and several popular digital versions, the hits just keep on coming. A recent press release revealed that Magic: The Gathering has a massively-multiplayer role-playing game in the works.
Cryptic Studios, the company behind such hits as Neverwinter and Star Trek Online, is developing the MMORPG. The release states that the game is being developed from scratch for both console and PC. They’re aiming for it to be a triple-A title.
Much like the card game, the player in this MMORPG is stated to assume the role of a Planeswalker. In the Magic: The Gatheringlore, Planeswalkers are beings of immense power. They’re able to travel between different planes of dimension at will. This hints at the possibility that the upcoming game will have many different realms to explore.
Both companies seem very excited at teaming up to bring players into the epic world of MTG on a grand scale. Cryptic CEO Stephen D’Angelo promises a “truly unique AAA game” and says that Magic fans will have an opportunity to explore the game’s characters in a never-before-seen way.
According to David Schwartz, Wizards of the Coast Vice President of Digital Publishing, this is just another part of an initiative of theirs. Calling it the Magic Digital Next movement, they aim to expand the card game’s world far beyond the table into the digital realm.
Cryptic Studios is a subsidiary of Perfect World Entertainment, a Chinese game publishing company responsible for a wide array of MMORPGs, mobile games and MOBAs.
