Munchkin playing on stage.

One of the most surprising departures of the Overwatch League just happened. The Boston Uprising have released DPS player Sang-beom “Munchkin” Byeon from their roster.

A true Overwatch League veteran

Munchkin was one of the original players in the league, beginning in the inaugural season. He was part of the Seoul Dynasty in both of their previous seasons but didn’t get much playtime over their other DPS players.

Being regarded as a Tracer and Widowmaker player primarily, his skills fit the first season well, but not the second one. People expected him to get played more after his success in the first, but the meta change said no. He was never regarded as one of the best in the league, but he could match up well enough. Nevertheless, Seoul subsequently released him.

When Munchkin was welcomed to Boston Uprising in November 2019, it seemed he was getting another chance. Now, only a month into this Overwatch League season, Boston says its goodbyes to the player. His tenure as an Uprising player lasted only three months, with one appearance during the season.

Why was he released?

This seems to be the question on everyone’s minds. According to an official statement from the Overwatch League, it was a mutual agreement between both Munchkin and the Uprising. Chris “HuK” Loranger, leader of the Uprising, stated, “We are respectful of his decision to depart from the team and wish him luck in his next venture.” If Munchkin asked to leave, it may mean that the travel or some other aspect of the job wasn’t working for him. Alternatively, perhaps there was an issue behind the scenes that has yet to come to light. Munchkin may reveal the truth of things in time.
