Overwatch Lunar New Year 2020: Year of the Rat

With the Winter Wonderland event coming to a close, it is time to celebrate the new year once again. For Overwatch events, the next one up is the Lunar New Year event, celebrating 2020 as the Year of the Rat. This update is coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch possibly as soon as next week. An official announcement and release date hasn’t come from the Overwatch team yet, but using last year as a measure, it must be fast approaching.

New year, new Overwatch event

In previous years, the Lunar New Year events have always brought new skins, map redesigns, and game modes for the players to enjoy. These events usually come around midday on Tuesdays or Thursdays, so it could come as soon as this Thursday.

For those new to Overwatch, here is last year’s Year of the Pig event video.

As usual, this event will release new Lunar New Year-themed skins, some specifically about the animal the year represents (the rat for 2020). Mixed with new emotes, voice lines, and animations for plays of the game, this event is set to release more cosmetic content for the game.

Hopes are going into possible new Overwatch modes rotating into the arcade, with the Workshop being introduced recently. Plus, players who didn’t get the chance to obtain the Lunar New Year items from previous years that they missed might get another chance to do so. These could include popular skins like the Firework Junkrat or the Baihu Genji.

When will it go live?

Per usual, it is likely to release at 1 p.m. EST (10 a.m. PST, 6 p.m. GMT), but the day isn’t confirmed yet. There is a chance it could be as soon as Jan. 14. But with the actual Chinese New Year being Jan. 25, it seems unlikely. It most likely will release either Jan. 16 or 21.
