PewPewU wins Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at Emerald City 8, Big D Ultimate Singles winner

Kevin “PewPewU” Toy won Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at Emerald City 8 in Seattle, Washington on May 25. As the highest seed at the tournament, PewPewU had a relatively smooth ride to Winners Finals. PewPewU defeated both Chaucer “Fauxhebro” Gilson and Ammon “Ka-Master” Styles without dropping a game.

PewPewU met his greatest challenge in Winners Finals, when Steven “FatGoku” Callopy took him to game five. However, PewPewU was able to 3-0 FatGoku in Grand Finals. FatGoku’s run to 2nd included wins over Tommy “Pricent” Lindås and Derek “Aura” Olsen. GENESIS 6 in February was FatGoku’s strongest performance to date, as he placed 9th with wins over Rishi “Rishi” Malhotra, James “Duck” Ma, Daniel “ChuDat” Rodriguez, and Toussaint “2saint” Turnier.

Though he only placed 4th, Aura had perhaps the most impressive run of any player at Emerald City 8. Aura was not ranked in the Top 100 on the 2018 MPGR. Nevertheless, he secured four Top 100 victories at this event, beating Nicholas “NMW” Whittier, Andrew “Tai” Vo, Theodore “Bladewise” Seybold, and Ka-Master. Aura was eliminated by Pricent, a visiting Fox main from Norway.

Big D is known for his unorthodox character choices in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He is among the best in the world with both Dedede and Ice Climbers, characters with which few are successful. At other events, Big D has defeated players like Landon “Captain L” Trybuch, Antony “MuteAce” H, and Aaron “dyr” Wilhite.

The results of this event became less predictable when Guillermo “Stroder” Martinez Jr. dropped out. Had he attended, Stroder would have been the clear favorite to win Emerald City 8 Smash Ultimate Singles. This is because of his wins against high-level opponents, such as Gavin “Tweek” Dempsey, Eric “ESAM” Lew, and William “Leffen” Hjelte.
