Justin “Plup” McGrath & Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman won Super Smash Bros. Melee Doubles at Shine 2019. Melee Doubles at Shine took place on Friday, Aug. 23. The event marks the first Doubles victory for Plup and Mew2King since Pound 2019 in April.

The winning duo started top 32 with a 3-0 win over Luis “TheSWOOPER” Olivo & Toussaint “2saint” Turnier. They faced a more difficult challenge in Winners Quarters. Still, Plup & Mew2King beat Hendrick “DJ Nintendo” Pilar & Gordon “G$” Connell with a 3-2 set count.

Despite their Winners Quarters scare, team Plup2King didn’t go to game five for the remainder of Shine 2019 Melee Doubles. They scored a 3-0 victory over Griffin “Captain Faceroll” Williams & Jason “Arkouda” Gauthier in Winners Semis.

Plup & Mew2King finished the tournament with a pair of 3-1 victories. They beat Zachary “SFAT” Cordoni & Kevin “PewPewU” Toy in Winners Finals. Then they beat Shephard “Fiction” Lima & Cody “iBDW” Schwab in Grand Finals.

Plup & Mew2King have teamed together at four other events this year besides Shine 2019 Melee Doubles. They have yet to place lower than 3rd at any of these tournaments. The duo boasts placings like 2nd at Super Smash Con 2019, and 3rd at Smash’N’Splash 5 and GENESIS 6.

Other results from Shine 2019 Melee Doubles

Fiction & iBDW had an impressive run to 2nd as the No. 4 seed in Shine 2019 Melee Doubles. They reached Winners Semis, defeating Jacob “Jflex” Pinto & Trevor “Atomsk” Hirschen and Aziz “Hax” Al-Yami & Kurtis “moky” Pratt. However, they lost to SFAT & PewPewU on winners side of top 8.

Fiction & iBDW started their losers run by beating Michael “MikeHaze” Pulido & Albert Luu. The duo continued into Grand Finals by taking sets off of Captain Faceroll & Arkouda and SFAT & PewPewU. These wins carried them to 2nd place in their first event teaming together.

Recent tournaments have proven that SFAT & PewPewU are not as untouchable in Melee Doubles as they once were. Their 2nd place finish at Pound 2019 ended a year-long winning streak, which lasted from Full Bloom 4 to Full Bloom 5. SFAT & PewPewU did win three Doubles tournaments after Pound. However, their 3rd place finish in Shine 2019 Melee Doubles is the duo’s worst placing since 4th at GENESIS 5.
