MSI 2019 to be held in Vietnam, says Riot Games

MSI 2019 Taiwan Vietnam Taipei

It looks like this year’s Mid-Season Invitational is heading to Asia. Riot Games has announced that MSI 2019 will be held in Vietnam and Chinese Taipei.

This year marks the first major global event in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Additionally, this is the first time that MSI will be heading to Taipei. The tournament will start on May 1st to the 7th, where the play-ins will occur. Ho Chi Minh City will host the play-ins during that time. Afterward, the group stages will play out in Hanoi on the 10th to the 14th. Finally, the Knockout Stage and Grand Finals will play out on the 17th to the 19th in Taipei.

For people not in the know, MSI is a mid-year tournament featuring some of the best League of Legends teams around the world. Each major region will send their most recent split champion to battle it out for the championship. A Western team hasn’t been able to win this tournament yet, with South Korea and China dominating the winner’s circle. However, if Worlds 2018 is any indicator, we could see another Western team in the Finals soon!

Welcome to Vietnam!

This region has a decorated history with League of Legends and its competitive scene. For example, Taiwanese esports organization Taipei Assassins would lift the Season Two World Championship trophy. Beating Azubu Frost to win Worlds is considered the greatest moment in Taiwan’s esports history, as well one of the most important moments in esports for the country. Since then, Vietnam has seen improvements to their esports infrastructure, as well as interest in the League esports scene. Riot would state:

Most recently 2018 saw the launch of the Vietnam Championship Series, a new regional league which can qualify teams directly into the World Championship. We wanted to recognize the tremendous progress of the region and the enthusiasm of its players by hosting one of our biggest events there.

People will be able to purchase tickets for MSI in mid-March, while Riot Games will be announcing venues alongside ticket information. Hopefully, they will handle venues and locations better than they did Worlds 2018 but according to Riot, it seems like they are planning well in advance for their events. MSI itself is a pretty new tournament to League of Legends, as it was only introduced in 2015. Previous MSI’s were held in the United States, China, Brazil, and Europe.
