SKT inks VR/AR endorsement deal with Riot Games

South Korean telecommunications company SK Telecom has signed a endorsement deal with Riot Games Korea, becoming the official patron for the LCK. The press release by SK Telecom details the exclusive broadcasting agreement and their rights to create VR/AR content for League of Legends Champions Korea.

This endorsement deal will last until 2020 and will focus on promoting SKT’s new 5G line of products through their events. With League of Legends being one of the most popular games in the world, this is a great opportunity for SKT to attract users through integration with its Oksusu live streaming platform.

5GX View Feature

A new feature, named 5GX View, will allow viewers to simultaneously view 10 different viewpoints of different players in a match. Instead of normally just seeing the caster’s point of view, viewers will be able to observe different players. Users will also be able to enlarge the screen up to four times the usual magnification, without any image quality degradation.

SKT also confirmed its plans to develop live AR/VR broadcasting features for the 2019 LCK Summer Split. Through a VR headset, viewers will be able to immerse themselves in the LCK matches, as well as participate in virtual fan meetings. For those not able to attend a match, viewers on the Oksusu platform with a VR headset will be able to view the stream from a stadium perspective as well.

AR/VR Application

While just speculation, this feature could become a mix between Fortnite’s application of its live Marshmello concert and the popular VR server, VRChat. A system that would allow viewers to attend LCK events virtually and also interact with others doing the same.

In February, SKT and Comcast Spectacor announced a joint venture named T1 Entertainment & Sports. The new venture included SKT’s League of Legends team which rebranded to T1 and also a new Apex Legends roster.

The 2019 LCK Spring Split Grand Finals take place this Saturday, April 13, at 1:00 AM Pacific Time. Want to keep up with all of the latest news? Keep track on our League of Legends page!
