Sony PlayStation 5 games event delayed over BLM Black Lives Matter

Sony has announced that a planned PlayStation 5 games reveal event will be postponed. The event, scheduled for June 4, has been moved to an unspecified date. The PlayStation account postponed the event to not interrupt worldwide Black Lives Matter protests. The protests began after the death of George Floyd on May 26 in Minneapolis, MN.

In a statement on Twitter, the PlayStation account stated, “We have decided to postpone the PlayStation 5 event scheduled for June 4. While we understand gamers worldwide are excited to see PS5 games, we do not feel that now is a time for celebration and for now, we want to stand back and allow more important voices to be heard.”

The event was expected to show off several new PS5 titles. The event also could have been players’ first in-depth look at the controller and the console itself. Fans got their first look at the new console specs earlier this March, which included details on the CPU, GPU, backwards compatibility, and more. The PlayStation 5 controller has also been revealed.

PlayStation is working to back up its support

Gaming communities have been voicing their support for the Black Lives Matter movement over the past week. The main Sony Twitter account has been particularly responsive to criticism and calls to action from other users. One Twitter user responded to Sony’s tweet with, “Donate a sizeable amount to any, or all, reputable resources for the cause. #BlackLivesMatter doesn’t carry on with words of courage from a large conglomerate like Sony.”

Sony replied with “You’re right. The first step is not being silent. But we do want to make sure we’re showing up, and not just speaking out.” These tweets of solidarity appear to be the first step in Sony and PlayStation’s support. What other steps both Sony and PlayStation will take have yet to be revealed but should be announced soon.

The PlayStation 5 games event has not been rescheduled yet, but unverified rumors are presently pointing to June 12.
