Last night during Top 8 of Street Fighter V at Combo Breaker in Chicago, fans were treated to the reveal trailer of the next character for Season 3 of Street Fighter V, Final Fight alumni Cody Travers. Check out the new Street Fighter V Cody trailer beflow.
In an awesome touch by Capcom, the beginning of the trailer is in live action, featuring Bullet Club member and New Japan Pro Wrestler superstar Kenny Omega as Cody, seemingly settling into his role as the new mayor of Metro City (a position formerly held by Mike Haggar, of Final Fight and Marvel vs. Capcom fame) when a mysterious voice urges him to turn on his TV, calling back to the infamous intro of Mike Haggar discovering his kidnapped daughter from Final Fight.
Also worth noting is that the mysterious voice on the phone is none other than Kenny Omega’s longtime friend and fellow wrestler, Xavier Woods of The New Day. Once Cody turns on the TV we are treated to the trailer proper. Like all of Street Fighter V‘s DLC trailers, it focuses on Cody’s V-Skill, his two V-Triggers, and his super.
First off is Cody’s V-Skill, the “Double Kick”. Just like in Final Fight, Cody jumps in the air and does a spin kick. This move can be used as an anti-air, or in certain situations as a combo ender, presumably in the corner.
Cody’s first V-Trigger is “Sidearm” in which he uses his signature knife. Similar to Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter Alpha, Cody’s punches gain extra range and become safer on block when the knife is in use. Cody can throw the knife straight at the opponent, or at an angle as an anti-air by pressing HP+HK. While V-Trigger is still active Cody can pull out another knife by pressing HP+HK again. You no longer have to manually walk over to the discarded knife to pick it up like in Street Fighter IV. Cody also gains access to an additional special move while in V-Trigger I, “Rapid Fire”. This lets Cody stab the opponent multiple times and is a great combo ender. If V-Trigger ends while Cody is holding his knife he will continue to hold onto it until it is thrown, or when he hits the opponent with it, even on block.
Cody’s second V-Trigger is “Dirty Coach” where he channels the previous Mayor of Metro City and unleashes his trusty pipe. The range on Cody’s HP normals are drastically increased, and he gains access to another special, the “Gentle Swing”, by pressing HP+HK. He also has an anti-air version called the “Gentle Upper Swing”. Cody also gains access to an updated version of his rock special from previous games while in V-Trigger II. Named the “Bean Ball” Cody is able to throw the rock at the opponent, and the rock has its own hitbox, therefore acting as an effective projectile. Cody can also hit the rock with his pipe at different timings for varying results. He can either hit it straight at the opponent, at an angle in the air, or roll it towards the opponent’s feet. If Cody uses the Gentle Upper Swing the rock will fly off screen and land a certain distance away from the opponent depending on the strength of the punch button used.
While Cody does lose access to his tornado projectile in V-Trigger II, he gains the ability to cancel certain specials into the Gentle Swing. Also, like the knife in V-Trigger I, if Cody is still holding onto the pipe after the V-Trigger gauge runs out, he will continue to hold onto it until he makes contact with the opponent, whether on hit or block.
Cody’s Critical Art is the “Criminal Punisher”, a powered up version of his “Criminal Upper” special move from previous games. Personally, I am a little disappointed with the Critical Art. I expected something much more flashier, like his “Final Destruction” Ultra from Street Fighter IV.
Cody also now has a more traditional fireball in the form of his Tornado Sweep, which sends a whirlwind hurtling towards the opponent. Returning from previous games are his Zonk Knuckle and Ruffian Kick specials. He will also have a few new target combos added to his arsenal as well. I really hope we still get his trademark “BINGO!” from Street Fighter IV when he uses the Zonk Knuckle. It just wouldn’t be the same without it.
Cody will be available for download on June 26th for $5.99, 100,000 in game fight money, or as part of the Season 3 Character Pass for $29.99 which includes previously released Season 3 characters; Sakura, Blanka, and Falke, and will also include G and Sagat when they become available later this year. If purchased with real money individually or through the Character Pass you will also gain immediate access to Cody’s Battle Costume with colors 3-10, as well as default costume colors 3-10 without having to unlock them in game.
The Story Costume is a homage to previous Mayor of Metro City, Mike Haggar.
His Battle Costume is supposedly a reference to what he might wear to more formal functions as the new Mayor.
Cody’s Nostalgia Costume is a reference to his costume in previous games. There will also be a special code to allow Cody to wear this costume with the tank top worn underneath exposed, and his prison sleeves tied around his waist. I imagine this will work similar to Urien’s special costume code which allowed him to burst out of his suit and wear his traditional thong getup from Third Strike.
Last but not least is Cody’s Final Fight costume, harkening back to his original appearance in the arcade classic. This costume will also have a special code to give Cody a “battle damaged” look.
All in all, Cody appears to be a well-rounded character with a traditional fireball and excellent combo enders, while his V-Triggers give him access to extra gimmicks and setups.
Season 3 of Street Fighter V is now halfway over with only G and Sagat left to be unveiled. The smart money is on Sagat being revealed at EVO this year, but regardless we will keep you up to date with the rest of Season 3 as it develops.
