During Thursday’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct, fans got their first look at the last DLC character to be released in the Fighters Pass Vol. 1. Byleth, the professor blessed by a goddess, has joined the ranks of their fellow Fire Emblem series characters already in the game. Some Smash fans felt that at seven characters the series was starting to feel a little overrepresented, and their online reactions are reflecting it. Even series director Masahiro Sakurai poked fun at the addition of another sword-using character in the game, the goddess Sothis from Fire Emblem: Three Houses making a sly quip to the very vocal Smash community’s disdain for characters with swords.
None of that was able to stop Sakurai from introducing Byleth to the game. And after a year of unique fighters including Joker from Persona 5 and the bear-bird combo of Banjo & Kazooie, fans took to the internet to let everyone know exactly how they felt with their hottest of takes.
Nintendo fans: "We got many 3rd party characters as DLC, we want NINTENDO characters!"
Sakurai: "OK, Byleth from Fire Emblem Three Houses for Nintendo Switch family of systems"
Nintendo fans: "wait no…" pic.twitter.com/RnNSvFAF04

After eight characters they’re not wrong.
The most important takeaway from Byleth's trailer is that there's a mailbox in Byleth's head pic.twitter.com/m5GV8uWC47

This… is actually a really good point.
You know what I just remembered? Dante being in Smash would complete the roster that Sony wishes they could've had for PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale. pic.twitter.com/1a19tjZrVe

Fun fact: you can now play an eight-person free-for-all match with only Fire Emblem fighters.

This is probably the best take on the whole Nintendo Direct video.
