Magic: The Gathering Throne of Eldraine spoilers technically began last week, but today marked the first official day of spoiler season. Amidst a few other great new MTG Arena cards, we got a brand new keyword soup mythic rare: Questing Beast.
Questing Beast is a monster from Arthurian legend. In its original depiction, it had the neck of a snake, the body of a leopard, the haunches of a lion, and the feet of a deer. The name Questing Beast comes from the sound it reportedly made: the barking of a group of dogs hunting, or questing, after prey. Throne of Eldraine is a set where a lot of the cards are based off of fairy tales and medieval legend, so the Questing Beast is right at home!
This card seems pushed… right?
Absolutely. This is totally one of the most pushed cards we’ve seen in recent years. It boasts three keywords, it can’t be chump blocked, its damage can’t be prevented, and it just casually wrecks Planeswalkers. This card is so incredibly strong, but luckily for non-green mages, it doesn’t have hexproof. This is good news because it means that an instant speed Mortify or Ob Nixilis’s Cruelty can save you from being overwhelmed. In MTG Arena Standard, this is going to be yet another solid answer to little Teferi and most of the WAR Planeswalkers. It also gets past our newly resurrected mechanic: protection. Part of protection is the prevention of damage, which Questing Beast nullifies. This means that Questing Beast can kill an attacking Blightbeetle in combat.
This new MTG Arena card is super strong and will probably see a fair amount of play. If you wanna keep tabs on new Throne of Eldraine spoilers, be sure to check out our MTG news page over the next week.
