Wrenn and Six… What are they?

This Planeswalker is a little different when compared to the ones we usually get. Lore-wise, the reveal article had the following to say about them:

“So what is that thing? Well, Wrenn is the being in front and Six is a Treefolk host carrying Wrenn around. Six is the sixth Treefolk, a mech-like vehicle for Wrenn to symbiotically pilot.”

So, we have a Planeswalker walking around in a big Treant-Mech, which may be one of the cooler character designs in MTG.

Breakdown

Looking at the abilities of our newest Planeswalker, it does some powerful things. Let’s get into it a bit:

  • Wrenn and Six come down on turn 2 and, since your opponent doesn’t receive priority until after you activate the +1 ability, they will survive a Lightning Bolt.  In other words, it passes the Bolt test which is huge.
  • The +1 is a pure value ability. You can reuse Fetch lands, Ghost Quarter, and the new Prismatic Vista in Modern. In Legacy, you can just Wasteland every single turn much as you could with Crucible of Worlds.
  • The -1 here seems a little lackluster, but honestly, it hits a lot. It can make quick work of cards like Birds of Paradise, Noble Hierarch, Llanowar Elves, Grim Lavamancer, Thalia Guardian of Thraben, and many others. It can also be used to soften a creature with 4 toughness for an easy Bolt kill.
  • The ultimate is just absurd, letting you recast spells from your graveyard repeatedly in the late game. The only issue is making sure Wrenn and Six live that long.

Verdict

Wrenn and Six will more than likely be tried out in Ponza and may even spawn its own archetype in Modern alongside Life from the Loam. In Legacy, Wrenn and Six slots into RG Lands easily and can enable Wasteland locks pretty quickly. It will definitely get tested and has a good chance of finding a home.
